Q: Why do I see a "no dial-tone" message?

A1: The phone line into your modem may be in the wrong plug. Most modems have two jacks. One is typically labeled "Phone" or it might have a picture of a phone by it. The other is usually marked "Line" or "Telco." You want the active phone line from the wall to plug into the female connector marked "Line" or "Telco."

A2: Your modem may not be operating correctly. To see if Windows recognizes your modem do the following:

For Windows 95/98/ME

1. Click on the Start button, then select Settings and then Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Modems icon.

3. Click on the Diagnostics tab. You should see the name of a modem listed to the left of a COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.

4. Highlight the COM1, COM2, COM3, etc. to the left of the name of your modem and click on the "More Info" button underneath the window.

5. You will see a message, "Communicating with the modem. This may take a few minutes."

6. The screen should fill with some detailed information. If it does, then Windows recognizes the modem. If no information appears, you will have to configure your modem with Windows before you can use it.

For Windows 2000/XP

1. Click on the Start menu, go to settings, then click on the Control Panel.

2. Double-click the icon for Phone and Modem options. **Note--In Windows XP, you may have to click on "Switch to classic view" to see this icon.

3. Click on the "modems" tab on the top. Your modem should be listed in here. Double-click on the name of your modem.

4. In the modem properties window, click on the "diagnostics" tab on the top, then click on "query modem".

5. If you receive any error messages during this process, you need to either reinstall your modem or have it replaced.

A3: Your phone line may not be functioning. Plug in a regular phone to the modem jack at the computer marked "Phone" and see if you receive a dial tone.

Q: Why do I lose my Internet connection if I am on line and receive an incoming call?

A: You can randomly lose a carrier if you have a phone system with call waiting and you have not disabled call waiting through a software setting. This will not always cause loss of carrier, but it can sometimes.

**Important** For this feature to work correctly you have to have disable call waiting service from your telephone company.

1. Choose Start, Settings, then Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Modems icon. Click on the Dialing Properties button.

3. Check the box that indicates you have call waiting. From the drop-down menu behind the call waiting box select the call waiting disable string, which is typically *70.

4. This will disable call waiting prior to making your Internet call and prevent an incoming call from disrupting your active Internet connection. You can also dial the *70 when you are making an important telephone call and don't want to be interrupted.
