| Q: What Software do I need to get on the Internet? A: You need 3 components to dial in, browse the web, and send and receive e-mail. 1. Dial-Up Software – this comes as part of any version of Windows. It is on the original CD. New computers pre-load this software on your computer. If you have an older computer you may have to re-load it from the CD-ROM. 2. Browser Software – The most popular package is Internet Explorer from Microsoft. New computers running Windows come with Internet Explorer already loaded. 3. E-Mail Software – Microsoft’s Internet Explorer comes with Outlook Express and it is also available for free to download from Microsoft's website. Q: Where do I get the software? A: In most cases it is found on your computer. Browser and e-mail software can be downloaded from the Internet and it is also available on an Internet Distribution CD from the telephone company. Q: How do I set up the Internet on my Windows computer? 1. Click on the Start menu and locate the Run button. 2. In the prompt that appears next to the Open button, delete any text inside the box, and type inetwiz (all together as one word). 3. This will start the Internet connection wizard, use the following procedure to set up your Internet Service Provider. 4. The first screen will offer you two options. Choose the top one: connect using my phone line, then click Next 5. At the next screen enter the dial-up number for your phone company (our dial-up numbers are available in our basic information) and UNCHECK "dial using the area code and country code". This prevents your computer from dialing long-distance when connecting to the phone company. Click Next. 6. At the next screen enter in your user name and password. These must be entered exactly as they appear on the Internet application form. Click Next. 7. The following screen will ask you to name the connection, this name has no affect on the computers operation so you may choose anything you wish. Click Next. 8. At the following screen you may choose to set up a mail account as well. If you select no then it will bring you to the last page where you click finish. If you select yes, you will need to continue with this guide. 9. It may give you the option of configuring a new mail account or using an existing one. For this guide we will create a new one. 10. In the Display Name field you need to enter your name. This is how your email appears in someone else's inbox when they receive a new email from you. This can be whatever you want. Click next. 11. At the E-Mail Address screen enter your e-mail address, enter the email address you were given by the phone company. Click next. 12. At the E-Mail Server screen at the top it will say "My incoming mail server is a POP3 server". Further below, in the sections "Incoming mail" and "Outgoing mail" type in the mail server of your phone company (not sure what it is?) This must be entered exact in order to work. Click next. 13. At the Internet Mail Logon screen, enter your username (the first part of your email address before the @ symbol) and your password. These are case sensitive. If you would like to have Outlook Express save your password, make sure the "Remember password" box is checked. Also, if the "Log on using secure authentication" box is checked, your email will not work. Click next. 14. At the Complete Configuration screen click Finish. This should complete the wizard and set you up for your internet.
