A: If you have an icon on your desktop for My Computer, click on
it with the right mouse button. This should open up a menu. Select
properties from the menu. This will tell you what version of Windows you
have.
If you have no icon for My Computer on your desktop, it should be
located in the Start menu on the right-hand column. This means that you
have Windows XP.
Q: My "Save Password" checkbox is unavailable in the "Connect to"
screen.
A: This difficulty has two common sources. 1. When Windows starts, it may prompt you to log on. This is completely separate from your log on you receive from the phone company. If you click Cancel in the logon dialog box that appears when Windows 95/98/ME starts, Windows will not open your cache list file and your password cannot be saved. 2. If you install your Dial-Up Networking and do not install the client for Microsoft Networks, you may see the "Save Password" checkbox unavailable. To remedy the problem, try the following: 1. If you encounter a logon dialing box when starting Windows 95/98/ME, click on OK rather than Cancel. Using a user name and no password will allow you to save your dial-up password later. 2. Click Start, then select Shut Down, then choose "restart". Q: I get the error message "Port in Use" or "Port already open". A: This is a Windows error that tells you that another program attempting to use your modem or that your Dial-up networking software is not functioning properly. Usually restarting your computer will fix the problem. If it doesn't, contact us for further troubleshooting. Q: How can I tell what version of Internet Explorer I have? A: Open Internet Explorer and click on the Help menu. Inside there you will see "About Internet Explorer." After you click on it, it will open a dialog box that has the version number inside. Q: My computer dials the Internet when I am not even around. A: If you leave your computer and your e-mail program is loaded, it may be set to check for mail every "xx" minutes. ["xx" represents any numeric setting you have chosen.] If your software is configured for automatic dialing, the e-mail program could dial your Internet provider, stay on line, and not disconnect until an inactivity timer disables the connection. If this occurs, change your settings in your e-mail program so it does not automatically check for e-mail every "xx" minutes or terminate the e-mail program when you are away from your computer. Also, several programs require Internet access in order to function (i.e. instant messenger programs, file sharing programs, antivirus programs). If these programs are started when your computer starts, you may be prompted to connect to the Internet EVEN THOUGH you did not ask it to connect.
